Lib Dems slash early years funding

From April 2011, central government funding for Sure Start children’s centres was changed so that it is now included within the government’s “Early Intervention Grant”. This fund was set at 10.9% lower than the funds it replaced, equating to a £370 million cut for much needed and greatly valued services.

Shortly after being elected last year, Lib Dem Education Minister Sarah Teather said “There is no reason Sure Start centres should not be able to charge for services.”

Your local Labour Council opposes this unnecessary government attack on the services that parents use the most. Cllr Hurley said “This is yet another example of Lib Dems and Tories joining forces to launch an attack on the services hard-pressed families use. These are greatly valued children’s services that should not be cut just because the parents work for a living. The politicians in Parliament who are doing this to our communities ought to be ashamed of themselves.”
